Why Atlas organises content as a tree and what that means for navigation.
Pages inside pages
In Atlas there is no distinction between folders and documents. Every page can have subpages, and the tree on the left shows exactly this nesting. Moving a page moves its whole branch.
The tree as navigation
The page tree is navigation, table of contents and search space at once:
- Click opens the page.
- Arrow expands and collapses subpages; the state is kept per device.
- Typing into the search field filters the tree live by title and description.
Limiting depth
More than three levels are rarely helpful. Atlas does show deeper levels, but from there on search beats clicking.
Rule of thumb: when a branch has more than seven subpages, it usually is an area of its own.
Orphaned pages
Pages without a parent land in the area “Unassigned”. That is not an error but a hint: either an area is missing, or the page should be deleted.
